Interview with Iron Gaming Champion Heinz (CLG)
After an exhilarating weekend of competition at Iron Gaming Columbus, HCS now has the first LAN event under its belt. Following this notable occasion, we were fortunate enough to snag an interview with Heinz of Counter Logic Gaming, the event’s championship team.

ESL: It’s great to have you, so let’s just jump right in. You, like the rest of us, must be thrilled that Halo is making a comeback. What are you most looking forward to experiencing with this first HCS season?

Heinz: Yeah, of course we are thrilled. Something I am most looking forward to is the constant competition. Playing against the top players all of the time is a lot of fun and always keeps you improving. Also, seeing all of these friends so consistently that I haven't seen for a while is awesome!

Well, you got the opportunity to do just that at IG Columbus. Your team made it all the way through the winners bracket, eventually beating Evil Geniuses in two best of fives, both of which were forced into a game five. Friendships aside, do you think there could be a bit of a rivalry forming between EG and CLG?

Of course. I agree with Snipedown when he says that this reminds him of the Str8 Rippin vs. Triggers Down rivalry back during Halo 3's prime. There will definitely be a rivalry between CLG and EG even though we are friends with each other because at the end of the day, we are both going for the same thing - 1st place.

People have said that EG has the raw skill to be the best, but that CLG has the teamwork necessary to really bring it home. What is your best piece of advice for developing such a cohesive team?

Communication is key. I feel like the three teams that placed in the top 3 have the best communication right now. It is more than just calling out enemy locations. Things like letting your teammates know where you are going, if you can help them, how many are dead, etc. really makes a difference.

Great advice from a great player. After this last tournament, do you think there are any improvements you and your team need to make to boost your performance in subsequent tournaments?

Yeah. One thing we know as a team is that we need to work on our positioning on Warlord. At the pre-release tournament, we won every Warlord gametype, but struggled on Lockdown and Shrine. In our practices we focused a lot on our Lockdown and Shrine strategies and it paid off. We didn't focus on Warlord as much and it definitely showed this past weekend.

Luckily, you still managed to have the upper hand. Switching topics, one major change we’ve seen with the revival of the competitive Halo scene is eSports brands picking up teams, yours included. Do you think this is a step in a positive direction for the future of competitive Halo?

Organizations like CLG, EG, Cloud 9, Optic etc. getting involved is a very big deal and great news for Halo. It establishes that the interest in Halo is growing and the support from the right people is there.

It definitely provides a sense of validation for the Halo community to know that eSports brands that have seen so much success in other titles are now seeking that same success in Halo. Aside from the competitions, what other involvement do you have with CLG?

CLG has a team house in Southern California that we are all excited to move into in the near future. It will only help build our chemistry as a team, plus the Cali weather will be nice in the winter!

That sounds like a great opportunity, and it’s easy to imagine that moving into a team house would only further to strengthen your team inside and outside the game. It’s exciting for fans and the community to see that Halo teams are back and are going to be bigger than ever. Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans before we sign off?

Thank you to the CLG organization, sponsors and their fans for all of the support they have given us. It means a lot! Also, thank you to Iron Gaming for hosting the event. Last, but not least, thanks to my family for always being so supportive of my gaming career, even when it isn't going so well :)

With Halo back on the rise, it sounds like it will be all uphill from here! Thank you so much for your time and best of luck to you and your team. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for you in your future endeavors!

Thank you for taking the time out to interview me!
