What is the ESL Major Series?

The ESL Major Series is a series of prize winning eSports tournaments hosted by the Electronic Sports League. Since the summer of 2007 we have hosted a total of ten seasons with over 30 games, 218.000 Euros prize money and an incredible amount of teams and players involved from national qualifiers until the finals. The tournaments are the highest level of online European competition for a number of deserving gaming titles that are not included in our Intel Extreme Masters.

The tournament kicks off with national and international qualifiers spead over the whole of the Electronic Sports League, with only the best of each region surviving each phase of qualification to win themselves a slot into the main round, the groupstage.

While the ESL Major Series is European based, we accept teams and players from all over the world if the competitive side of the game (ping, etc.) allows it ( League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, etc.).

There are two types of groupstages in the EMS, depending on the size of the game and popularity based on the many different country sections here on ESL, they either have a 24 or 16 participant groupstage. Once more only the best will make it out and move on to the playoffs stage and eventually the grand final.

The basic principle in the ESL Major Series is that everyone gets at least one chance and each season we strive for the best of each game.

We have our trusted strong titles in the league such as Counter-Strike: Source (first person shooter), Call of Duty (first person shooter), FIFA (sports) and Trackmania Nations Forever (racing) and we have a number of sponsored titles each season.

Heroes of Newerth
League of Legends
World of Tanks
Avalon Heroes

Before the start of every edition we look at the activity from the games here on ESL and decide if one or more titles need to be changed or added. If you don't see your favourite game in the list, then do what you can to make it more active and it could be included. Counter-Strike 1.6 and StarCraft 2 are exclusive to the Intel Extreme Masters.

Live Streaming and other Broadcasts

We continuously look for different media partners in all of our games of all broadcasting platforms in as many languages as possible. We already have several partnerships, cooperation's and individual streams are made every day (keep an eye on your favourite matches). Our in-house IPTV ESL TV is also covering some of our most prestigious matches.

What is eSports?

It is an acronym for electronic sports. This refers to the competitive aspects of computer game tournaments. Players train hours after hours to become the best in their game. The ESL Major Series features the best players and teams from across Europe and beyond whose matches are followed online by thousands of players.

How can I take part?

To take part in the ESL Major Series you or your team must qualify through your country's national qualifier. The qualification for each game differs for each country, sometimes it can be the ESL Pro Series, ESL Amateur Series, a national league or open qualifiers. If a country does not have its own qualification then you will be able to qualify through the European qualifier. Details of how to qualify will be announced at the ESL Major Series homepage at the beginning of each season. The Spring Season is announced in January while the Autumn edition is announced in August.
